Non-Degree Programs

COVID-19 UPDATES

Visit admissions.cofc.edu/covid-19/ for the latest COVID-19 Office of Admissions updates.

Students who do not intend to enroll in a degree program may register for a limited number of courses as an auditor or as a non-degree student.

If you wish to enroll in undergraduate courses, but do not intend to seek a degree at this time, you may apply as a non-degree student.

You have many undergraduate enrollment options:

***A graduate application is required to enroll in graduate level courses.  Graduate courses typically are numbered at the 500 level and above.

Applying

  • Complete the non-degree application.

  • Provide proof of lawful presence.

  • Non-degree students may need to submit transcripts (unofficial or official) to enroll in some courses that require pre-requisites. Transcripts should be sent to the department.

  • Students in non-degree status may formally transfer into a College of Charleston degree admission program after completion of 15 - 30 hours of coursework with a minimum 2.6 GPA. At that time, official transcripts from all colleges and universities previously attended must be submitted if they are not currently on file.

  • Students who do not meet our degree-seeking requirements may not be eligible for non-degree admission.

Deadlines

Spring semester: December 15

Fall semester: August 15

Take the Next Step

Registration

** Non-degree students may register for two consecutive semesters unless a fall or spring term is missed. In that event, a student must reapply for admission. Failure to enroll during the summer does not interrupt the status of a non-degree student. Students should use the "Look Up Classes" link in the Registration Tools channel on the Academic Services tab in MyCharleston.

Registration dates are based according to prior hours earned at the College of Charleston. Registration is on a space-available basis. Only the professor and department offering a course can approve an override request for students to join a closed course or courses requiring pre-requisites or special permission. Students should contact the department directly for assistance.

Auditing a Class

  • If you audit a class, you won’t receive a grade or credit hours. However, there will be a record of your participation on your College of Charleston transcript.
  • To register for class, follow the same procedures and deadlines you would if you were taking a class for graded credit.
  • Complete the Permission to Audit Request Form. Have the form signed by the course instructor on the first day of class and return it to the Office of the Registrarduring the drop/add period.
  • Payment is due upon registration.

Note: Tuition is the same whether you audit a class or take a course for graded credit.
