Application Checklist for International Freshman

  1. Application Method: Complete and submit the CofC application or The Common Application (Common App).
  2. Official Transcripts: Submit your complete high school transcripts directly to College of Charleston in the original language with the school’s official stamp/seal .
  3. Certified Translations: If transcripts are written in a language other than English, certified, word-for-word English translations of all transcript pages must be submitted.
  4. Standardized Examination Scores: Submit scores directly to the College of Charleston from one of the following examination boards:
    • iBT TOEFL (code: 5113) minimum score of 80
    • IELTS minimum score of 6.5
    • iTEP Academic Plus minimum score of 3.8. Virtual, at-home testing option available online here:  www.itepexam.com/virtual-testing
    • SAT (code: 5113) minimum Evidence Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) score of 500
    • ACT (code: 3846) minimum Reading score of 18 and English score of 20
  5. Copy of passport picture/data page.

Advanced Standing Credit

The College awards credit for Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), selected Cambridge International Exams (A Level and AS Level), and many College Level Examination Program (CLEP) exams based on the student’s scores. Click the links below to view the credit awarded.


Conditional Admission

College of Charleston offers conditional admission to applicants of all undergraduate programs who are academically eligible, but have submitted English Proficiency scores slightly below the requirements for degree seeking admission.

To qualify for conditional admission, a student must demonstrate having earned a minimum score of:

Individuals who submit English Proficiency scores below our minimum requirements will be considered for conditional admission on a case-by-case basis.

Students who do not currently meet English proficiency standards may be offered the opportunity to be conditionally admitted to begin study at the College of Charleston in the English Language Institute. Under specified conditions, these students may be allowed to take a limited number and selection of courses in a degree-seeking program while enrolled in the English Language Institute’s program. Once English proficiency has been achieved, the student may be fully enrolled in a degree-seeking program.
